Uses of Gas and Oil

We have done blog posts before on uses of natural gas and the ways it has tremendously helped in ways some of us didn’t even know. We are dependent on natural gas whether we like it or not. I wanted to bring back this topic but bring oil into the mix as well. What are our every day uses or oil and gas? Could we live without it?  What are some common uses of each one?

Let’s Start with Natural Gas…

gas uses at home

A typical house and all the components where natural gas is used. However, I see that the car in the garage is not a natural gas-powered. I know, I know…most cars aren’t. Over one-half of the homes in America are supplied with natural gas. The majority of uses for natural gas in a home is used for water heating and space heating. Not many of us could go without a warm shower! It can also be used in gas stoves and ovens when cooking, lighting, clothes dryers and many other appliances.

You can see in the info-graphic to the right, the percentages that natural gas is used in each sector. I personally thought natural gas would be used a lot more in the industrial sector as compared to the residential sector. The fact that there is only a 10.6% difference goes to show just how much each of us have a use of natural gas in our own home!

What about Oil?

Crude oil, or petroleum, is also used in many different ways. Are you reading this blog on your phone or computer? So either of those things have a case on them? Either way, I bet there is plastic on one of those devices. No? Then check out the clothes you are wearing. What color are they? These are just a few things that petroleum has played a part in. Petroleum makes plastic and helps make the clothes you’re wearing non-flammable! Not only that, but it helps with the color in your clothes. There are so many uses for oil that I am just going to keep it to household items as that is something most of us can relate to.

  • Do your pots and pans of a non-stick lining? Yup! You guessed it…that coating is created using petroleum.
  • The food in your kitchen was most likely fertilized to help growth at some point. Or your plants outside. Fertilizer is made using petroleum.
  • Thankfully, our homes feel different different than the temperature outside. Insulation is to blame for this which made with petroleum.
  • Refrigerators, door liners, foam insulation, oh my! Yup..all made with crude oil!

I feel like I could go on forever. But this is just to name a few.

As you can see, the oil and gas industry is a major player in our everyday lives. Without oil and gas, we would have to say goodbye to everyday products and necessities in our lives. How does CROFT play a role in the industry? Check out our products and find out!
